2024 U.S. Corn 6% Planted vs. 5% Average, Soy 3% vs. 1% Average

As of Sunday, U.S. farmers had planted 6% of the 2024 corn compared to 7% last year and 5% average. Warm temperatures over the weekend encouraged farmers to start planting. In the mid-South, Tennessee is 13% planted (14% average), Kentucky is 9% (11% average), Missouri is 26% (10% average), and Kansas is 13% (10% average). Planting in the Midwest has started with Iowa 4% (2% average), Illinois 3% (4% average), Minnesota 3% (0% average), and Nebraska 2% (1% average).
The U.S. soybeans are 3% planted compared to 3% last year and 1% average.
If the weather cooperates going forward, the U.S. could have an average spring planting. The weather has been wetter in the eastern Corn Belt and dryer in the western Corn Belt, so the planting should progress the fastest in the western areas.
The 2024 U.S. corn acreage is estimated at 90-91 million acres with an initial yield of 179 bu/ac. If some of the fringe corn acres do not get planted as indicated in the March Prospective Plantings Report, that would tend to support the nationwide corn yield. The 2024 U.S. soybean acreage is estimated at 86.5 million acres with a yield of 52.0 bu/ac.
