2022/23 Argentina Corn 88% Planted vs. 92% Average

Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

The weather seems to be improving somewhat in Argentina. Last week and over the weekend, Argentina recorded some of the best rains thus far this growing season. Rains were active across Cordoba, Santa Fe, Entre Rios and Buenos Aires with amounts ranging from 1-2 inches. Over the next 10 days, rains should remain active across northern and central Argentina. More rain is needed because the core production areas of Argentina have registered the driest conditions in over 60 years.

The recent rains probably came too late for the early planted corn, but the later planted corn will benefit from the additional moisture.

The corn in Argentina was 88.6% planted as of late last week compared to 87.9% last year and 92.2% average. The ideal corn planting window in Argentina closes about the end of January and there are still approximately 700,000 hectares left to plant. The early planted corn is approximately 50% pollinated or beyond, while the later planted corn is mostly in vegetative development with 10% pollinating.

The corn is rated 47% poor/very poor, 48% fair, and 5% good/excellent. The good/excellent percentage is down 2% from the previous week. The soil moisture for the corn is rated 57% short/very short and 43% favorable/optimum. The favorable/optimum percentage is up 3% from the prior week.

Below is the corn condition rating in Argentina from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange for January 19, 2023.
