As Brazilian farmers prepare for the 2024/25 growing season, everyone is paying close attention to the weather forecast.
Central Brazil - The conditions in central Brazil continue hot and dry with very little rain in the forecast until maybe the second half of September. Most metrologists anticipate only light showers during the second half of September and not enough to start planting.
The Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) is forecasting below normal rainfall during the months of September and October in all of Mato Grosso. The dryer weather could slow down the planting pace and maybe impact some of the earliest planted soybeans. Most farmers in Mato Grosso will wait to plant soybeans until they have received enough rainfall to ensure germination and stand establishment.
The first significant rains may not occur until early October and by significant, they are referring to 2-3-4 inches. One producer in Goias indicated that the soil was so dry, he was going to wait for 100 mm of precipitation (4 inches) before starting to plant soybeans.
Southern Brazil - The forecast for southern Brazil is wetter. The forecast is calling for some rain in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Parana, and southern Mato Grosso do Sul. August temperatures were cool in southern Brazil, but they are now back to normal or above normal.
Conab will release their September Crop Report on Thursday, September 12, 2024. The report will still focus on the 2023/24 growing season. In their October Crop Report, Conab will issue their first official estimate of the 2024/25 crop production in Brazil.
