2024/25 Argentina Corn Estimate Lowered 1.0 mt to 48.0 Million

After a hot and dry start last week, some rain did move into central and southern Argentina over the weekend with northern areas remaining mostly dry. Conditions going forward should be marginally wetter and cooler across the region compared to last week. However, above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall will continue to stress crop growth.

Early planted corn, which is currently filling grain, got ahead of most of the recent hot and dry conditions. The late planted corn is not as fortunate and it has started to pollinate under adverse conditions. The corn estimate will likely continue to decline in the weeks ahead, how much remains to be determined. The Rosario Grain Exchange lowered their 2024/25 corn estimate to 48.0 million tons.

Corn planting in Argentina was 95% as of late last week with only corn in far northern Argentina remaining to be planted. Approximately 300,000 hectares of corn is yet to be planted in northern Argentina. Below is the corn planting progress in Argentina as of January15, 2025 from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange.

Corn in Argentina was rated 14% poor/very poor, 47% fair, and 39% good/excellent as of late last week. The good/excellent percentage is down 3% from the prior week. Soil moisture for corn is rated 36% short/very short and 64% favorable/optimum. The favorable/optimum percentage is down 13% from the prior week.
