Argentina Reinstates Export Taxes on Grain and Meats

On Wednesday, Argentina reinstated export taxes on grain, their derivates, and meats. The country quickly met their goal of US$ 7 billion external sales limit, thus ending the program.
On Monday the government made a surprise announcement that export taxes on soybeans, corn, wheat and derivatives including biodiesel, beef and poultry would be eliminated until October 31st or until external sales reached US$ 7 billion to help support the Argentine peso. The ceiling in sales was reached in just two days. On Thursday, the export tax on soybeans will return to 26% and on corn and wheat, it will return to 9.5%.
Chinese buyers took advantage of the brief tax window to bolster their inventories by purchasing an estimated 35 cargos or more of Argentina soybeans.
The Rosario Rural Society and other leaders of the agricultural sector coitized the short duration of the program because it seemed to have only benefited large exporters. The aim of the program was to quickly obtain dollar reserves to stabilize the exchange rate which the exporters took advantage of. Small and medium-sized producers saw only limited benefit.
