Safrinha Corn Acreage in Mato Grosso to Increase 1.8% says Imea

Mato Grosso is the largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil and according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea), the 2025/26 safrinha corn acreage in the state is expected to increase 1.83% to 7.39 million hectares (18.2 million acres). The expansion is driven by increased domestic demand especially for ethanol production, but higher production costs and low corn prices are limiting expansion plans.

Imea's initial estimate of the 2025/26 safrinha corn yields is 116.6 sacks per hectare (111.2 bu/ac), which is the average of the last three growing seasons. This equates to a reduction of 6.7% compared to the record yield set in 2024/25. The state is expected to produce 51.7 million tons of safrinha corn in 2025/26.

Farmers in Mato Grosso had sold 25.2% of their anticipated 2025/26 corn production as of November 2025 compared to 19.5% last year at this time.
