Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

Corn - The condition of the 2021 U.S. corn crop improved 2% last week to 64% rated good to excellent. Five states indicated that the corn condition had improved last week, 12 states indicated that the corn condition had declined, and 1 state was unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the northern areas while most of the declines were found in the central and southern areas. The five highest rated corn states are: Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio. The five lowest rated corn states are: North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Colorado.

Rainfall and mild temperatures benefited the corn last week and they did get some much needed rainfall in parts of the dryer western Corn Belt.

Soybeans - The condition of the 2021 U.S. soybean crop was unchanged at 60% rated good to excellent. Five states indicated that the soybean condition had improved last week, 9 states indicated that the soybean condition had declined, and 4 states were unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the northern areas while most of the declines were found in the central and western areas. The five highest rated soybean states are: Indiana, Tennessee, Louisiana, and a tie between Mississippi, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. The five lowest rated soybean states are: North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Kansas, and Iowa.

The soybeans did not seem to get quite as much benefit from the weather last week.

Soil Moisture - The nation's soils got dryer last week with 2 states indicating improved soil moisture and 16 states indicating lower soil moisture. The only improvements were found in Ohio and Wisconsin while all the other states declined in soil moisture. The five states with the highest soil moisture are: North Carolina, Nebraska, Ohio, Louisiana, and Missouri. The five states with the lowest soil moisture are: North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Arkansas, and Iowa.

The driest state is North Dakota with 92% of the topsoil rated short to very short, South Dakota is 82%, Minnesota is 80%, Arkansas is 68%, and Iowa is 53% rated short to very short. Rainfall over the weekend and early this week in the western and northern Corn Belt should help improve the soil moisture.
