September weather - The September rainfall in Brazil was a little more than last year, but temperatures were hotter than last year. Far southern Brazil received the best rainfall especially in Rio Grande do Sul. Southern Parana and southern Mato Grosso do Sul received rain, but northern Parana stayed mostly dry during September.

It has been more of a mixed bag for central Brazil. There were some widely scattered showers last week across central Brazil and the forecast is calling for improved chances of rainfall later this week. In Mato Grosso the rains have been scattered in nature and more frequently across the western part of the state. In the city of Rondonopolis located in the southeastern corner of the state, there was no rainfall recorded during September.

Weekend weather - Over the weekend, there were ample rains across Parana and southern Mato Grosso do Sul with more scattered rains in Mato Grosso and Goias. The weather last week in Brazil was not as good as what had been forecasted, but the weather improved over the weekend.

The forecast for the first half of October is calling for good rains in Parana averaging 3 inches compared to 0.6 inches last year. In southern Mato Grosso do Sul, the forecast is for up to 2 inches during the first half of October compared to 0.2 inches last year. The forecast is not as optimistic for the center-west of Brazil with 0-1 inch of rainfall during the first half of October.

The pattern for the last couple of weeks has been that the weather has not turned out to be quite as good as what had been forecasted, but that is expected to change now that the calendar has turned to October.

Conab will issue their first assessment of the 2021/22 growing season in Brazil on Thursday, October 7.
