Imea Projects Mato Grosso Corn Acreage up 6.4% Yield up 14.5%

The Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) is estimating that farmers in Mato Grosso will increase their 2021/22 corn acreage by 6.4% to 6.2 million hectares (15.3 million acres) and that the 2021/22 corn production will increase 21.5% to 39.7 million tons.

The statewide corn yield is estimated at 106.0 sacks per hectare (101 bu/ac), which is up 14.5% from last year's yield. The yields are expected to increase because the 2021/22 soybeans are being planted generally on time. That means the 2021/22 safrinha corn in Mato Grosso should also be planted within the ideal planting window which closes about February 20th. Last year's safrinha corn crop was low yielding because it was planted as much as a month after the ideal planting had closed and it was also impacted by an early onset of the dry season before the crop had matured.

The increased acreage is being driven by continued tight corn supplies in Brazil and strong domestic corn prices.
