2021/22 Brazil Safrinha Corn 64% Planted vs. 39% Last Year

Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

My current estimates for the Brazilian corn crops are 22 million tons for the first corn crop, 89 million for the safrinha corn crop, and 1.7 million for the third crop.

First Corn Crop

The first corn crop in Brazil was 37% harvested as of late last week compared to 28% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 8% for the week.

Parana - The first corn crop in Parana was 38% harvested as of earlier last week according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). The first corn crop was rated 22% poor, 36% average, and 42% good. Deral increased slightly their estimate for the first corn crop in Parana from 2.73 million tons to 2.76 million. Farmers in Parana planted 435,000 hectares for their first corn crop (1.07 million acres) and the average yield is estimated at 106.1 sacks per hectare (101.2 bu/ac).

Rio Grande do Sul - Farmers in the state have harvested 57% of their corn compared to 48% last year and 43% average. This represents an advance of 3 points for the week.

Safrinha Corn

The safrinha corn was 64% planted as of late last week compared to 39% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 11% for the week

Mato Grosso - Farmers in the state had planted 82.7% of the safrinha corn as of late last week compared to 54.6% last year and 77.9% average. This represents an advance of 14.3% for the week. The fastest planting is in the mid-north with 92.7% planted and the slowest is the center-south with 61.4% planted.

As you can see on the graph below from Imea, the safrinha corn planting in Mato Grosso is 5 points ahead of average or about 2-3 days ahead of average. This is not quite as fast as Imea had predicted back in December when they estimated that 93% of the safrinha corn would be planted by the time the ideal planting window would close about the third week of February. Excessive moisture during January and February slowed the soybean harvest and thus the safrinha corn planting.

Parana - The safrinha corn in Parana was 36% planted as of earlier last week according to Deral. The corn was rated 15% average and 85% good. Conab estimates that farmers in the state will plant 2.6 million hectares of safrinha corn (6.4 million acres) or an increase of 5.2% compared to last year. Deral increased their estimate slightly for the safrinha corn from 15.2 million tons to 15.54 million. The statewide yield is estimated at 99.6 sacks per hectare (95 bu/ac).
