2022 U.S. Corn Rating Down 2%, Soybeans Down 2%

High temperatures last week and a general lack of rainfall led to lower condition ratings for both the corn and soybean crops.

Corn - The condition of the U.S. corn crop declined 2 points last week to 70% rated good/excellent. Five states registered improved conditions while 13 states registered lower conditions. Most of the improvements were found in the northwestern Corn Belt, while most of the declines were found in the central and eastern Corn Belt. The five highest rated corn states are: Pennsylvania, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Kentucky. The five lowest rated corn states are: Texas, North Carolina, Colorado, Kansas, and Ohio.

Soybeans - The condition of the U.S. soybean crop declined 2 points last week to 68% rated good/excellent. Five states registered improved conditions last week while 13 states registered lower conditions. Most of the improvements were found in the northwestern Corn Belt, while most of the declines were found in the central and eastern Corn Belt. The five highest rated soybean states are: Arkansas, Wisconsin, Iowa, Mississippi, and Kentucky. The five lowest rated soybean states are: North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, and North Dakota.

Soil Moisture - The topsoil moisture declined last week in all 18 reporting states. High temperatures and lack of rainfall was common across the entire Corn Belt last week. The five states with the highest topsoil moisture are: Ohio, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and a tie between Iowa and Missouri. The five states with the lowest topsoil moisture are: North Carolina, Louisiana, Kansas, Tennessee, and Arkansas.

There are still some areas of the northwestern Corn Belt and the far eastern Corn Belt where the topsoil is saturated. As of last Sunday, the topsoil moisture in Ohio was rated 21% surplus, North Dakota was 17% surplus, Minnesota was 17% surplus, and South Dakota was 11% surplus.
