2022/23 Argentina Corn 24% Planted vs. 37% Average

Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

The early corn continues to have a problematic start to the growing season. The dry weather and late frosts got the crop off to a rocky start. Some of the earliest planted corn is now starting to pollinate as the weather remains generally dry and the temperatures heat up. The early corn accounts for approximately 25% of the total corn crop and the yields of the early corn are expected to be disappointing.

Farmers will start planting their late corn later this week if there is adequate soil moisture and the total planted corn acreage in Argentina remains uncertain. There are reports that some of the early corn did not get planted and was switched to soybeans instead.

The 2022/23 corn in Argentina was 23.8% planted as of late last week compared to 30% last year and 36.9% average. This represents an advance of only 0.2% for the week. In the core production area, the corn is approximately 70% planted with 35-40% planted in southern Argentina and 0% planted in far northern Argentina. Most of the corn planting last week was concentrated in the southern areas where the recent rainfall has been better. The early corn is 56% planted and 52% in vegetative development and 1.6% pollinating.

The condition of the corn crop in Argentina improved slightly although it is still significantly below that of last year. The corn is rated 25% poor/very poor, 63% fair, and 12% good/excellent. The good/excellent percentage is up 1% compared to the prior week, but below the 81% rated good/excellent last year. The soil moisture for the corn is rated 32% short/very short and 68% favorable/optimum. The favorable/optimum percentage is up 2% from the prior week.

Below is the corn condition rating in Argentina from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange for November 24, 2022.
