2022/23 Argentina Soybeans 37% Planted vs. 61% Average

Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

The soybeans in Argentina were 37% planted as of late last week comparted to 57% last year and 61.4% average. This represented an advance of 8% for the week. In the core production areas, the soybeans are 50-60% planted. In southern Argentina, the planting progress is very irregular with some areas 15-20% planted and other areas 60-70% planted. The soybeans in northern Argentina are less than 5% planted.

According to Rodolfo Rossi, soybean specialists from the Rosario Grain Exchange, in the core production areas, if the soybean planting is delayed from October 15th to November 15th, the soybean yield can decline on average 25 kg/ha per day or 0.37 bu/ac per day. If the planting is delayed from December 1st to December 10th, the yield can decline 100 kg/ha per day or 1.49 bu/ac per day. Yield losses per day accelerate the longer planting is delayed throughout the month of December. There is also the possibility that not all the intended soybean acreage will get planted.

Argentina did receive some beneficial rains over the weekend especially in the north-central and eastern regions. Temperatures remained very hot over the weekend. The forecast for this week is generally dry for most areas in central and southern Argentina.

The Argentina soybean estimate was lowered 1.0 million tons this week due to the delayed planting and poor start to the soybean growing season. In the core production area, the soybean planting is 27% behind average (approximately 55% planted vs. 82% average) and the soybeans in general are rated only 11% good/excellent. Improved weather would help the soybeans, but the delayed planting by itself could result in lower yields.

The soybeans are rated 23% poor/very poor, 66% fair, and 11% good/excellent. The soil moisture for the soybeans is rated 34% short/very short and 66% favorable/optimum. Below is the soybean condition rating in Argentina from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange for December 7, 2022.
