Mato Grosso is Brazil's largest corn producing state and the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) recently increased their estimate of the 2022/23 corn production in the state. They are estimating that the corn production in the state will increase 6.3% to 46.6 million tons compared to 43.8 million tons produced last growing season. The increased production is the result of greater acreage and higher yields compared to last season.
The corn in Mato Grosso is planted as a second crop following soybeans, so as the soybean acreage increases, so too does the corn acreage. Mato Grosso is expected to increase the soybean acreage in the state in 2022/23 by 6.3% to 11.8 million hectares (29.1 million acres). The corn acreage in the state is also expected to increase 6.3% in 2022/23 to 6.8 million hectares (16.7 million acres).
Much of the corn produced in the state is exported and corn exports from Mato Grosso are expected to total 26.9 million tons by the end of the 2021/22 marketing year.
In November, Brazil started to export corn to China for the first time and Brazilian corn exports to China in 2023 could be as high as 5 million tons. China turned to Brazil for corn to replace the corn exports from Ukraine interrupted by the Russia-Ukraine war.
