Corn - The 2023 U.S. corn condition improved 1% last week to 51% rated good/excellent. Seven states indicated that the corn condition improved last week, 10 states indicated that the corn condition declined and 1 was unchanged Most of the improvements were found in the central and northern areas while most of the declines were found in the western and southern areas. The top five rated corn states are: Colorado, Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina, and Minnesota. The five lowest rated corn states are: Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Kansas.
The rains last week and over the weekend were beneficial for the corn crop and they helped to steady the crop after several weeks of declines. Additional rainfall will be needed as more of the crop enters pollination.
Soybeans - The 2023 U.S. soybean condition declined 1% last week to 50% rated good/excellent. Five states indicated that the soybean condition improved last week, 11 states indicated that the soybean condition declined, and 2 were unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the central and northern areas while most of the declines were found in the western and southern areas. The top five rated soybean states are: Tennessee, Mississippi, Minnesota, North Carolina, and a tie between Kentucky and Ohio. The five lowest rated soybean states are: Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.
It was a little surprising that the soybean condition declined slightly last week. The soybean condition declined in the southern Corn Belt and the Delta, which helped to lower the percentage rated good/excellent.
Soil Moisture - The nation's topsoil moisture improved last week with 12 states indicating improved topsoil moisture and 6 states indicating lower topsoil moisture. Most of the improvements were found in the central and northern areas while most of the declines were found in the western and southern areas. The five states with the best topsoil moisture are: Ohio, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Dakota. The five states with the lowest topsoil moisture are: Missouri, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, and Louisiana.
The topsoil moisture registered a significant improvement last week especially in most of the driest states. The rainfall over the weekend over-performed compared to the forecast.
