Corn - The condition of the 2023 U.S. corn declined 1% last week to 52% rated good/excellent. Six states indicated that the corn condition improved last week, 10 states indicated that the corn condition declined, and 2 were unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the northern and southern areas while most of the declines were found in the central and western areas. The top five rated corn states are: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina. The five lowest rated corn states are: Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
There were only minor changes in the corn condition this week, which is not unusual this late in the season. The corn condition is now rated slightly below 2022 when the final corn yield ended at 173.3 bu/ac.
Soybeans - The condition of the 2023 U.S. soybeans declined 1% last week to 52% rated good/excellent. Six states indicated that the soybean condition improved last week, 10 states indicated that the soybean condition declined, and 2 were unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the eastern and southern areas while most of the declines were found in the central and western areas. The top five rated soybean states are: Tennessee, Arkansas, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The five lowest rated soybean states are: Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Missouri, and South Dakota.
The soybean crop only registered minor changes this week and the condition is now rated lower than in 2022 when the final soybean yield was 49.5 bu/ac.
Soil Moisture - The nation's topsoil moisture declined last week with 6 states indicating improved soil moisture, 11 states indicated lower soil moisture, and 1 was unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in northern and southern areas while the declines were found in the central and western areas. The five states with the best soil moisture are: Michigan, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina, and Kentucky. The five states with the lowest soil moisture are: Louisiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, and Mississippi.
This marks the fourth week in a row of declining soil moisture and it is now below last year and the long term average. Given the current forecast, it will probably decline again next week. This is not a good way to end the growing season, especially for the soybeans.
