2023/24 Argentina Corn 20% Planted, Slowed by Dry Conditions

The corn in Argentina was 20% planted as of late last week compared to 17% last year. This represent an advancement of only 0.6% for the week.

The early phase of corn planting in Argentina will end next week so the amount of corn planted during this phase is probably going to end up less than anticipated. Normally, about 40% of Argentina's corn is planted during this early phase. It appears that some farmers are going to wait and plant their corn during the later phase which starts in late November and early December in the hope of improved soil moisture.

Instead of waiting to plant their corn in December, farmers may switch some of their intended early corn to soybeans instead. In fact, the Minister of Agriculture in Argentina indicated last week that their corn acreage estimate is now down 1% from their prior estimate due to a lack of adequate soil moisture.

Additionally, frost caused some damage to early planted corn, but the growing point for the corn was still below ground, so the corn should recuperate, but the early growth will be slowed.
