Lower Yields Expected for Safrinha Corn in Northern Paraguay

Northern and eastern Paraguay have been under the influence of a blocking high pressure system located over central Brazil. For several weeks, the region has been hotter and dryer than normal. According to the vice-president of the Soybean, Oilseed, and Cereal Producers of Paraguay (APS), yields of the safrinha corn in northern and eastern Paraguay will be down 40% or more due to the adverse weather.
Northern Paraguay was dry for a 40-day period causing irreversible damage before rain returned over the last few days, but the rain came too late to revitalize the safrinha corn.
In southern Paraguay, the safrinha corn has been developing normally and yields are expected in the range of 100 sacks per hectare (95 bu/ac).
